Maroon Socioterritorial Movements

Maroon communities, or communities of descendants fugitives from slavery, have been long-lasting examples social movements pursuing political goals through the production and mobilization space. They largely forgotten in academic analyses, however, which, Latin America, are primarily focused on peasants indigenous movements. Therefore, drawing socioterritorial readings maroon studies, this article analyzes how maroon-descendant produced territory both urban rural spaces—including areas forced displacement—locally transnationally, to survive hegemonies deeply rooted legacy slavery achieve aims. These unsettle binary categories monolithic visions antistate struggle. This transterritorial, rural–urban appropriation spaces resisting different powers follows past logic marronage freedom security, re-creating present times vision historical leaders regarding construction a grand Palenque Spanish-speaking Caribbean.
